Sounds from the Grassland Village is the culmination of a residency by sound artist Jason Singh and visual artist Fabric Lenny (Paul Slater) at Chester Zoo between 30th July - 3rd August 2018.

The content of this album has been derived by recording live biometric data from a variety of orchids held in Chester Zoo’s extensive collection of Nepenthes, Orchids and Cacti.

The music was created by attaching sensors to the flower/leaf and roots of each plant. Electrical signals from the plant where then converted, in real time, into MIDI data which was then fed through a synthesiser.

All the notes, chords and melodies where generated by live data from the plants. The decision of the sonic aesthetic was made by the artist.

Inspired by the concept of ‘Plant Blindness’ the Awekids Collective (Fabric Lenny, Steve Symons and Jason Singh), seek to celebrate the all round awesomeness of plants using visual arts, music and technology.
